Shadowy Love

Finally doing some (hopefully) dope stuff here. Babson’s freshman curriculum is packed with business courses, so the most creative I’ve been this semester has been designing snapbacks and flyers for my apparel company. I made this short film over the past few days for my Arts & Humanities class. If you’re going to watch it, do that before you read my description, you’ll know why later.

There are some words we use under certain circumstances without understanding the full spectrum of the definitions these words encompass. Arguably the most indefinable word in circulation, when it comes to its range of interpretations, is the word ‘uncanny’. Freud said, “It is undoubtedly related to what is frightening — to what arouses dread and horror;” but that only begins to encapsulate the full strata of the uncanny. When people point out “uncanny resemblances” between people and places, they usually do not mean they are horrified by said resemblance. It was my goal to analyze something I perceived as uncanny, in the hopes of uncovering another layer of the multitude of delineations of this word, hence the use of shadows to depict a love story between two people. Shadows are undeniably uncanny. They mimic our every move, are all of the same race (however different shades), come alive in the sun and the light, and often tower in front of or behind us, relentlessly stalking no matter how much effort we might put into escaping its (seemingly) harmless wrath. Shadows are often accentuated in television and film for dramatic effect, but is it possible to connect emotionally with a film solely featuring shadows? You tell me.

One Response to Shadowy Love

  1. amazing film–the camera angles, lighting, focus, and the smaaaaart way of getting at the subject matter. I think yes, it is possible to connect emotionally with a film solely featuring shadows, though there are human feet in there too which are very suggestive. Imagine if instead of a love story those shadows were acting out a scary scene–stalking, murder, something like that…would still be emotionally very intense.
    cool experiment
